Can a hardfork occur due to changing the consensus protocol

Hardforks occur when protocols with cryptocurrency occur such as modifying any of its parameters.

Is it possible or has it ever happened for a hardforked altcoin to exist due to a change in the cryptcurrency's consensus algorithm.

I mean a change from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake for example, not just changing the hash function used within the proof-of-work as happened with Bitcoin gold.
