Checking the first and last characters of a cryptocurrency address?

When confirming that an address entered on a site/app is what I expect it to be, I often check the first and last 3-4 characters to see if they match.

Is this practice dangerous? Could an attacker feasibly generate an address that matches at the beginning and end, but is different in the middle?
